One potential cause could be a poor internet connection on the user side. However, MBIE, National Records of Scotland and several other shinyapps.io users have reported intermittent server disconnection errors, which crash the app and force users to re-load it.
Reliability: AWS is a reliable cloud provider. However, there is no formal Service Level Agreement. Performance: more expensive subscription plans offer “improved performance”, and the Scottish Government has not encountered performance issues. RStudio have stated that they intend to offer hosting in other regions, and this issue would be probably be solved if shinyapps.io hosting in the AWS Ireland region was available, but no timetable has been set. European Union data protection law: shinyapps.io currently runs on Amazon Web Services servers located in the US, which will raise legal issues if the uploaded app data includes personal data originating from the EU. Security of the app data (1): customer data is uploaded to the shinyapps.io server via https, and once the data is on the server, it should not be accessible by other shinyapps.io customers. Some public sector organisations might however require hosting companies to be vetted if any of the uploaded data is confidential / personal / subject to pre-release access regulations. No set-up or maintenance of a physical or virtual server requiredįor these reasons, shinyapps.io is well-suited to piloting shiny in an organisation.
